Area is approximately 12,000 square kilometers located between two of the islands, Buru and Seram, once called the South Moluccas

The two islands are the native habitat of many plants long coveted for their use as spices, such as nutmeg, cloves, and black peppercorns, and the seas around them were busy shipping routesThe Ceram Sea is also the habitat of several different species and many other fishThe Ceram Sea is rocky and very tectonically active as many other small Indonesian seas
